They do choose the songs they are singing. They are given an artist's songbook to choose their songs from. Then they are judged on how they perform the song and make it relevant to them. David Cook does a great job turning any song into a David Cook original. EX: Mariah Carey night!!! And yes Paula is a little on the crazy side.
