Since when did Mitt Romney become a viable candidate?

i haven't been following election coverage due to illness lately, just remember last election he failed to be the nominee bc of his incosistant record, one year he's for gay marriage, one year not etc, He has to be the least genuine candidate, how can anyone not see through this? I think the GOP can do better
