Q for JWs: Why are your leaders sometimes "imperfect men", and other times the only channel of God on earth?

If confronted by false prophecies and flip flops, JWs always say they are just imperfect and make mistakes. Yet in regards to a life/death issue such as blood transfusions, you obey them as if they were Jehovah himself, even to the death of yourself or your children?
